The government of Tamil Nadu encourages innovative measures in all possible dimensions to ensure more efficient implementation of programmes and delivery of public services by government departments. Govt of Tamil Nadu made an announcement to design and develop Unmanned Aerial Vehicles by Anna University with the help of TANII funds.

Innovation is the key to development. Various efforts of Tamil Nadu pointing towards helping this key variable of development to harness its intended results to benefit the State in terms of monitoring, production and ultimately income generation. These interventions vary from identification of innovation, policy towards encouraging it, funding it etc., or all of it.  Well documented vision 2023 encompasses these strategies. Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiative (TANII) helps in encouraging and funding these incubated innovations to flourish and fructify.  One such measure is funding the Anna University-MIT campus Aeronautical initiative of improvising Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).

The Vision 2023 had visualized in making Tamil Nadu the knowledge capital and innovation hub in all sectors viz., academic institutions, commercial business houses, government departments, sports clubs, and in society at large in the State. Tamil Nadu is leading in Auto, Textile, Leather and Engineering goods sectors in India. Innovation is imperative in manufacturing sector, to move ahead and compete with global leaders, the other sectors identified as growth engines of manufacturing include Aerospace, Defence, Electronics, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Telecommunications.
